Following his first very positive ‘Planet Visionary’ article on the Bluebell Railway, ‘Using the Ardingly Branch as a visitors coach park’, which drew in some ‘rave’ peer reviews from certain quarters. ;D This time our fully paid up Bluebell Railway Shareholder on this Forum Board, MARK [BLUEBELL SHAREHOLDER], seemingly stays clear of controversy! Or does he? You decide! ;D
CONSOLIDATION (Infrastructure & Rolling Stock Improvements): MARKETING TO INCREASE REVENUE (School trips, Excursions & Steam Heads!)
I briefly touched on the requirement of the Bluebell Railway to consolidate in another thread, after securing the much sought after return to the National Network. Just to add, I have been looking with amusement recently, at the out of date National and South East Region Rail maps, where it shows a dotted line between Kingscote and East Grinstead and a bold line between the Railway Stations Kingscote, Horsted Keynes, Sheffield Park, with the Bluebell Railway written by the side. ;D
The consolidation requirements at East Grinstead, with a shelter, improve the outer fencing and perhaps try to widen the platform. Then improving and expanding the loco and coach repair sections. Making good those maintenance jobs that have been building up on the Bluebell Network. Further double tracking to create additional cross over points for improved capacity.
It is a personal point of view, but the existing fencing between the Sainsburys access road and the Bluebell Railway Station, currently looks less than inviting. In my opinion it needs to look in keeping with the period of Steam Trains, to ‘seal’ the setting for the East Grinstead Bluebell Station. I am sure that eventually the Bluebell Railway will eventually raise their game here, to make East Grinstead (Bluebell) more visually attractive after a careful examination of the improvement needs. Then we currently have a platform with no shelter or cover from the wind and rain which hardly ideal. Viewing the excursion video, when the train came on Bluebell Rail, between the time 2:06 and 5:00;

There would appear to be room to move that rail further over towards the Boundary on the west side of the plot, which would allow a widened platform, perhaps a double platform. If the platform could be widened, why then have a fence there? These are just some initial thoughts that come to mind.
Then there is the extra mileage now needed to be undertaken on the existing rolling stock, to complete the improved timetabling. This will undoubtedly require more maintenance of both the steam locos and the carriages from wear and tear. When the passengers numbers rise, requiring a Timetable with three or four trains, this will further create a greater demand on the existing rolling stock. Again, Bluebell Railway will have more maintenance requirements. That is why during this consolidation phase, IMHO improving and expanding the loco and coach repair sections significantly will be vital. When I mention significantly, what about doubling the loco repair facility and tripling the carriage rolling stock maintenance unit?
Making good those maintenance jobs on the infrastructure that have been building up on the Bluebell Network, such as painting, logging, track alignments, etc. etc. I also believe, that further double tracking to create additional cross over points for improved capacity. I have already mentioned a few, but now feel double tracking a longer section just north of Horsted Keynes Station, for visiting rail excursion traffic.
Marketing in a pro-active way to target interest groups, such as Schools, Train enthusiast groups and organisations, plus rail tour operators home and abroad. I have mentioned Steam Heads, where I envisage other rolling stock from other Steam enthusiastic Railways come down for a day trip or weekend holiday. Just believe, be positive and it is do-able!!
More foot fall = increased revenue = improved Bluebell Railway.
Thank you for taking the time to read.
